Alba Iulia is the city of Romanian history: the union of Transylvania with Romania was declared here in 1918, and King Ferdinand was crowned here in 1922. The star-shaped Alba Carolina fortress, built between 1715 and 1738 to Vauban’s design, is the largest of its kind in the country and fully restored.

Inside the walls stand the 13th-century Catholic cathedral with the tomb of John Hunyadi and the Orthodox Coronation cathedral. Changing of the guard in 18th-century uniforms daily at 12:00.

Day trip with Câlnic and Sibiel or with Hunedoara castle.
