- July–October by road; January–March ice hotel by cable car
Bâlea Lake sits at 2034 m in a glacial hollow of the Făgăraș mountains. The Transfăgărășan road, built between 1970 and 1974, reaches its highest point here and is open to traffic roughly from July to October. From the waterfall below, a cable car runs up all year.
In winter the ice hotel stands by the lake, rebuilt every year from blocks cut from the lake. Even in August it is ten degrees colder up here than in Sibiu; bring a jacket.
A summer day trip via Cârța and Albota; in winter an experience with a night in the ice hotel.
