Sibiu was founded in the 12th century by settlers from the Rhine and Moselle region and was for centuries the centre of the Transylvanian Saxons. The old town sits on two levels: the upper town with its three large squares, the lower town with craftsmen’s houses. Stairs and passages connect them, among them the Bridge of Lies from 1859.
The dormer windows with their narrow openings, the “eyes of the city”, are its best-known detail. The city wall survives along Strada Cetății with three towers. Sibiu was European Capital of Culture in 2007.
The daily old-town walk starts at 10:00 in Piața Mare; private and themed tours run all year.
